On Tuesday 21st January, we welcomed Stuart O’Neill, who is the Executive Development Chef from Chartwells (Compass Group UK), to Balshaw’s.

Stuart came in to run a Ready, Steady, Cook workshop with our Year 10x Food Technology students. Stuart began the workshop by quizzing the students on all of the different food groups and their importance. The students’ knowledge was amazing and they gave some really great answers.

Mrs Bromley selected the students for the red and green teams. On the red team we had Isabella, Tyler and Byron and on the green team we had Josh, Eric and Olivia. After an obligatory quick hand wash the students were given the details of the dishes that they were going to make by Stuart and list of instructions. The red team made a chicken curry, rice, raita, naan bread and a salad garnish and the green team made a vegetarian noodle stir-fry dish with Quorn, naan bread and a salad garnish. As per the famous TV programme the teams were timed and only had 15 minutes to cook and serve their delicious dishes.

Once the food was served, all the students from the Food Technology class, along with staff, sampled both dishes and then it was time to vote! It was neck and neck but the casting vote went to the green team!

Congratulations to both teams for their skills and efforts on making such a tasty treat.

A huge thank you to Stuart for coming along today for this educational and entertaining event.

Chartwells are our catering provider in school and you can find more information about on their website here.
