GCSE English Language and Literature

The English Department curriculum is broad and varied and aims to ensure students make very good progress across the Key Stages. At Key Stage 3 assessments are carried out regularly and students given clear, targeted feedback designed to further progress through the use of MAD marking (Making a Difference).

Please use the following links for more information about the range of topics covered at Key Stage 3:

At Key Stage 4 the department follows the WJEC syllabus and also offers AQA Media Studies at GCSE.

The English Department also takes part in a variety of internal and external extension activities such as The Young Writers’ Club (Valentine’s Day poetry competition, Grimm Tales competition), Year 10 Debating Society, Lancashire Book of the Year (this year we are part of the judging panel), Rotary Youth Speaks (we came 2nd in the 2015 National Final) and a variety of Year 10 AGT events at Runshaw College. Year 7/8/9 take part in AGT activities linked with other subjects to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, communication, creative and critical thinking and teamwork. We also have an English Student Council to give voice to our students.

We also organise (via our librarian) for visiting authors and have invited primary schools to share in these events. The librarian also organises an induction lesson for all students to assist with their transition to Key Stage 3 and, alongside our independent reading in class, this creates strong links between the English Department and the Learning Resource Centre.

2015 English Department results are outstanding:

  • English/English Language: 86% A*- C grades
  • English Literature: 91% A*- C grades
  • English Literature: 39% A*- A grades
