Balshaw’s Church of England High School

GCSE Results Day 2019

22 August 2019

Balshaw's was delighted to celebrate in the GCSE success of its 183 students as GCSE results were published this Thursday.  This year’s cohort of students have achieved the highest levels of attainment across Maths and English that the school has ever had.

This follows on from the school’s publication of its SIAMS Inspection Report in the last week of the summer term in which the inspector found the school to be Excellent in all areas of the inspection.  As a school that is proud of its Christian tradition and ethos which values all faiths, we were delighted that a quarter of GCSE Religious Education grades were at grade 9.

There were some outstanding individual achievements – five of our students had more grade 9s than any other grade.  Kate Doughty received seven GCSEs at grade 9, and Thomas Salisbury gained five grade 9 GCSEs.  Other students demonstrated high levels of progress above their expected outcomes such as Oliver Quigley who gained two grade 9 GCSEs and four at grade 8.

The school is proud of its academic curriculum reflected by the number of students achieving the Ebacc qualification.  This is a combination of passes in English, Maths, Science, a Humanities and a Modern Foreign language.  41% of students managed to gain passes across this suite of subjects (this compares to the national figure of 24% in 2018).

It's not just the outstanding academic attainment of our students that we are proud of, we are also proud of the progress that students have made from their starting points with us.  A significant number of students achieved a minimum of a grade and a half higher than expected from KS2 performance across all of their subjects.

  • 78% pass in both English and Maths
  • 86% pass in English
  • 83% pass in Maths
  • 41% EBacc passes

Headteacher, Steven Haycocks, said: “I am delighted that the hard work of our students and staff have brought the highest level of attainment that the school has ever had.”  We wish all our students in the Class of 2019 the very best of luck in whatever their future holds after Balshaw’s Church of England High School.
