It was a pleasure and delight to welcome back two old friends who left Balshaw's in the 1950s to go down memory lane. Alice Mills (nee Marsden) was being visited by her old school friend Janet Threlfall (nee Sherlock) from Sheffield when they popped in on a Friday afternoon to see what the old place was looking like.
It was a pleasure to see them tread the stage where they had performed in the school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and to recognise many of the names on the Rolls of Honour at the back of the stage. Alice had played Puck and Janet was in the choir that has provided the voices of the fairies singing.
We, Hermia, like two artificial gods, Have with our needles created both one flower, Both on one sampler, sitting on one cushion..." (Helena, Act 3, Scene 2)
The two friends went back to their old tutor room, now room 7, and shared their memories with Mrs Mackintosh as well as speaking to the prefects who were on their lunchtime duties. They had so many happy memories of their time at school and were thrilled that so much remained recognisable. They complimented all the students they met saying how happy, smiley and friendly they all were: "much more happy and welcoming than in our day."
