The Curriculum Leader Role and the PE Department:
The PE department at Balshaw’s Church of England High School is a special place to work where
students achieve incredible levels of sporting excellence. This is down to the superb commitment
of the department under the excellence, vision and drive for success under its former Curriculum
Leader.
The school achieves elite sporting success with international champions in many different sports
inside and outside school. In 2024 Balshaw’s became the U16 Lancashire Cup Holders in football
(a title that was previously won by a team with England international and Manchester United
player Phil Jones). International record holder and world champion freestyle footballer, Liv Cooke
remains a regular visitor to the school. We have national swimming champions, BMX champions,
gymnasts and netballers. Emma Dovey, former England netballer and captain of Manchester
Thunder developed her skills at Balshaw’s.
It is safe to say that Balshaw’s punches well above its weight when it comes to sporting
achievement.
However, what is most powerful about the vision implemented in the department is not the sense
of elitism, but inclusivity. At Balshaw’s everyone can achieve on “My PE Journey:” – the
curriculum that is structured to ensure that every student can see how sport can help them to
develop physical and mental fitness and develop skills that are transferable to all areas of life.
Although the PE department does not have a full-size Sports Hall (something that we are working
very hard on acquiring), it is in every other respect, very well-resourced. Indoors there is a dance
studio, a small sports hall, a fully equipped gymnasium that can take a full class of students and
access to the school hall when needed. The school also has an excellent climbing wall which can
be brought back into use. Outside we are blessed with 21 acres of land. At the heart of this is a
top-quality full size astroturf pitch around which are 4 grass pitches (football or rugby), long jump
pit, three tennis courts and a running track is marked during the summer season around the
astroturf pitch.
The department currently follows the OCR GCSE syllabus in Year 11 but has moved to AQA in Year
10. There are 2 GSCE groups in Year 11 and 1 GCSE group in Year 10. 2025 Key Stage 4 results in PE
were the best across all departments in the school, in what was a strong year for the school
overall.
The department has its own PE Technician to support resource management and coaching for teams who is passionate about
developing young people’s love of sport. The department also regularly works with trainee PE teachers on placement.
We are looking for a Curriculum Leader with passion for a breadth of sports, who will continue to
grow PE excellence and inclusivity at the school. They must be experienced teachers of PE, ready
to take up a sizeable mantle with a clear vision to maintain Balshaw’s reputation as a centre of
sporting excellence with academic excellence in PE GCSE and breadth and depth throughout the
curriculum and beyond.
The closing date is Midnight Sunday 5th October, 2025
