Job overview

The role of the School Business Manager:

The role of the School Business Manager is a critical one in schools. Leadership teams in schools are made up of staff who have been trained how to teach and to work with young people – for the most part, they have not been trained in financial planning, modelling and predictions. They are not experts in HR. They are not conversant with premises management and the ins-and-outs of compliance, health and safety and the million other jobs that a really great School Business Manager does!

At Balshaw’s the School Business Manager is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team. If the Headteacher is supported by a Deputy Head teacher in the running of the school in terms of student management, teaching and learning, pastoral care, parental communication etc. then a good School Business Manager is the equivalent support for the Headteacher in managing the finances that allow all of that to happen, the recruitment, the payroll, the health and safety, the site buildings and ICT infrastructure, data control and management and all aspects of compliance.

Balshaw’s is lucky to have had a series of dedicated School Business Managers who have maintained a strong budget and supported the governors and leadership team to be able to focus upon creating the best possible conditions for excellent teaching and learning with the best possible staff.

More detail about the role:

The finances of the school are very well-managed; careful stewardship and forward planning mean that Balshaw’s has continued to set balanced budgets. In addition to the 925 students on role, the school has 60+ teaching staff, and 56 support staff (this number includes invigilators, TAs, site staff and office staff).

The role of School Business Manager (SBM) is wide and varied. Some of the major elements are:

• School Budget Management and Financial reporting

• Premises Management

• Educational Visits Co-ordination

• Health & Safety

• Human Resources

• Leadership, Management & Governance

• Marketing & ICT Systems

• GDPR Compliance

• Statutory Compliance for Department for Education

Strategic planning lies at the heart of the role – being able to plan a budget and forecast effectively over 3 years requires skill and to no small extent a crystal ball! Keeping the headteacher and the governing body fully appraised of the short, medium, and long-term financial plans, possible issues and the potential solutions to these issues is the core function of the School Business Manager. The SBM at Balshaw’s is a fully functioning member of the Senior Leadership Team.
