The Role and the History Department

This is a chance for the successful candidate to join our exceptional History Department. A long-standing colleague, former student and head of department is retiring at Christmas.  This role is a direct replacement of the three day per week role he is retiring from.  The role is temporary as we will need to review what amount of History teaching will be needed from September 2026.

The department is well placed, having collaboratively built and fully resourced a centralised curriculum for KS3 and KS4. The curriculum is broad, academically rigorous and appropriately challenging for students, but there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to contribute to the evolution of the Curriculum. This is an exciting opportunity to join the History department which contains experienced staff keen to support a new head of department in developing further excellence in History.  History at Balshaw’s is the option of choice for students and achieves GCSE outcomes well above local and national averages.

At KS4 the department follow the AQA Specification and currently focus on the topics of Conflict and Tension: The First World War 1894-1018, Health and the People c. 1000 to the present day, Elizabethan England 1568-1603 and America 1920-73: Opportunity and Inequality.  Members of the Department are experienced examiners with AQA who will be able to share their expertise with the successful candidate or work with them to refine our approach to standardisation and moderation.

The department have a three-year KS3 and currently follow a broadly chronological journey through British history starting with the Norman Conquest right up to significant events of the twenty-first century.

There is a culture and tradition of trips and visits in the History department including an annual Battlefields Tour to France and Belgium (one of the most powerful and moving experiences in the school calendar) There is scope for the successful candidate to organise and run trips of their own that can contribute to the enhancement of our taught Curriculum and provide the Cultural Capital for our amazing students.

We are looking to recruit the best teacher possible to this role whether they are an ECT or an experienced teacher looking for the opportunity to work in a highly successful, oversubscribed school where relationships are strong and people stay!

The closing date is: Midnight on Sunday 19th October.
