TEACHER OF MUSIC

Required from September 2026

Full time, permanent

Grade: MPS/UPS (as agreed by appointing governing panel)

More about the role:

Music currently sits within the Department of Performing Arts at Balshaw’s meaning that responsibility for reporting to senior line managers and department-related administration is managed by the department leader. However, responsibility for the Music Curriculum and delivery of a rich, engaging and exciting musical experience sits with the Teacher of Music. As the role is within a broader department, we would consider an ECT with a strong curriculum knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for music at KS3 and KS4 for this position, as well as more experienced teachers of music. The successful candidate should have the capacity to teach some KS3 Drama if the timetable requires.

The Department of Performing Arts at Balshaw’s is very strong.  A number of alumni have gone on to become Oscar-winning (for screen writing, for special effects) as well as professional musicians and award winning actors.  The last two productions in 2024 and 2025 have been “We Will Rock You” (with a live band of students and staff on stage throughout) and Matilda.  Other musicals in the last few years have included: Oliver, Oklahoma, The Sound of Music and more.

We are looking for a driven individual who is excited about harnessing the talent of our young people through our choirs, rock band, brass band and vocalists.  We would love to develop a worship band and take music beyond the walls of Balshaw’s.  This year and last year the Balshaw’s choir led music at the Civic Centre Holocaust Memorial Event and we would love to do more music in the community.

We believe that music and the performing arts have the power to transform young people’s lives, so we are looking for someone who is passionate, driven and transformative to harness the huge musical talent that exists in this school.

If the successful candidate is an ECT, Balshaw’s provides excellent support for ECTs through its inhouse induction programme alongside the formal ECT programme through Embrace alongside weekly Professional Learning and Development.

About Music at Balshaw’s:

Music is taught throughout KS3 and at GCSE as an option. There is a strong tradition of music at Balshaw’s. There are a range of choirs (Chamber Choir, Junior Choir, Staff Choir) and different ensembles (Balshaw’s Brass, Rock Band).

The music room is well equipped and has 5 different adjoining practice rooms. Significant investment has been made in iPads and Apple desktops. However, all students at Balshaw’s also have their own laptops, so the development of Ableton would be a good area for development within the department. There are established links with peripatetic musicians for guitar, brass, drumming, singing and piano.

Music forms a key part of our worship and each year we deliver a production – at the last SIAMS inspection we had a production of Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat which showcased the symbiosis of music within our school culture and ethos. As well as the other musical productions mentioned above, Balshaw's also hosts an annual event called Balfest, featuring live music and performances.

Balshaw’s has a proud range of alumni working in the arts. From Oscar winning scriptwriters such as Tom Bidwell (My Mad Fat Diary, Watership Down, Casualty) to Oscar winning special effects designer Kim Libreri (Star Wars, The Matrix and recently the game Fortnite). A large number of other former Balshavians are currently working in major productions all over the country.

This is an exciting opportunity to come and bring music to life in an excellent school which has a passion for excellence in the creative arts.
