On Saturday 6th May 2017, former Balshavian and Coronation Street star, Tisha Merry and the incoming Mayor and Mayoress opened the Family Fun Day and Spring Fair at 11 am.

Also joining us on the day were staff from St.Catherine’s Hospice who brought their coconut shy raffle to win a mini.

The local fire brigade came along with their fire engine and visitors were able to meet the firefighters, sit inside the engine and press the button for the blue flashing light! We also welcomed the Porsche Owners’ Display Club who brought their amazing cars.

We were lucky to have a wonderful range of live music from our amazingly talented staff, former Balshavian’s and current students – Hayley Murray, Abby, Anni Pike, who was a contestant on X Factor 2016, Will Pike, Lilly Tarmey, Ellie Fazakerley and Eddie Bishop.

There was also a Great Balshaw’s Bake Off competition where students were able to highlight their culinary talents. The lucky winners got an amazing hamper each that were created by the very talented Tracie Vass of the Balshaw’s PTFA. Congratulations to our winners this year who were Laura, Josh  and Elise Monks – you will see photographs of their amazing creations in the gallery below.

We also had a giant slide, bungee run and our very own go-karts to name a few and they all proved to be very popular. There were still the old favourites of smash the crockery, rogues gallery and skittles the pillow fights!  There was also opportunity to test sporting skills with the ‘beat the goalie’ competition.

Like last year, there was an array of amazing wildlife from, Horus Birds of Prey, The North West Reptile Club, Pembertons lambs and calves and Newfoundland dogs.

Once again, indoors we had a range of wonderful stalls; books, toys, toiletries, cakes, Nicki’s Handmade Crafts, Eileen’s homemade greetings cards, Mr and Mrs Haydock’s tasty homemade marmalade and the very popular and tombolas (gift, bottle and chocolate).

Delicious food was served throughout the day and people enjoyed pizza, hot dogs, fresh burgers (from Leyland Market) and homemade sandwiches. More tasty treats of Tim’s delicious homemade ice cream, Shaka Shack Hawaiian Shave Ice, sweets, lots of fabulous cakes were also available!

Along with the tombolas, there were also lots of other ways to be lucky! We had, ‘Guess the Weight of the Cake’ (thank you to Alan for baking this extremely heavy cake!), ‘Beat the Lemon’, raffles and our 'Lucky Programme Draw' to win £25 Tesco voucher.

The Leyland Squadron RAF Air Cadets came along too with their stall and provided ‘first aid’ lessons for those who wanted to know more about what they could do to help others in need.

For the keen gardeners there were beautiful plants, hanging baskets and planters on sale from Duxburys Garden Centre.

We would like to thank our Patrons who donated money to our Family Fun Day and Spring Fair. Thank you to B&D Print Services Ltd for printing our amazing programme and Ventbrook Ltd for their continued support of supplying the cones for the go kart racing. Also, thank you to St.Catherine’s Hospice staff, everyone who helped, supported and came along on the day to make our event so fabulous. It means a lot to us and we are so very grateful.

Once again, we had another very successful day and while we are still waiting for the final total the proceeds will be divided with St. Catherine’s Hospice this year.

Please enjoy looking at the photographs taken at our event this year. We hope that you had a great time and look forward to seeing you next year.
