We are very proud of Abi, in Year 9, as she continues with her golfing achievements.
We thank Abi’s Dad for sharing more information about how Abi first discovered golf, previous and future competitions and events, along with the photograph.
It all started nearly 4 years ago; we were on a break in our tourer caravan at a site in Bentham. There was a golf course with a driving range, Abi, her sister, and friends wanted to try golf. Then when the holiday was over Abi wanted to continue, so she started attending group golf sessions at Trafford Golf Centre. We then found out about sessions at our local club (Leyland Golf Club). As she started to get better, we treated her to a membership at Leyland Golf Club and she started to play and practise a lot more. She had never really be into any sports, but could see herself improving and thought she would see how good she can get.
Over the last 18 months she has started to practise and play a lot more, she practises with other juniors at Leyland Golf Club on a Wednesday and Friday, sometimes going straight from school to practise herself. She plays most weekends, as she is a member of the Ping Junior Golf Tour which allows her to play at some very good courses in the UK (this is where she benefits from Dad’s taxi!). Abi is also a member of Lancashire Girls Golf Association and has training sessions every few weeks , as well as playing in some competitions, and this has given Abi the opportunity to represent Lancashire at a Jamboree in August, which is a 2-day event against other counties.
During a competition held at Blackburn GC, on 25th June, there was a little rain and wind but the main thing to contend with was how hilly the course was! At one point I heard her say “My legs are about to pop!” This was a stableford competition, which is points rather than total shots, Abi scored 44 points and her handicap on the day was 25.4, however due to 44 points being a very good score, her handicap has come down to 23 because of this. There were 6 girls in total taking part.
There are no more competitions for school but Abi does have 3 more for the Ping Junior Tour, 2 more plus the Jamboree in August, she will also be representing the junior team at Leyland GC against other Golf Clubs, as well as playing in the internal competitions @ Leyland GC.
Here is the photograph of Abi with her fabulous trophy:
It is very clear that Abi’s determination with her chosen sport is really paying off and we are excited to hear more in the future as she progresses.
