On Thursday 6th March, we were excited to welcome Bishop Philip North and Father Paul Robinson into Balshaw’s to lead our students and staff in a Eucharist Service.
Students in Years 7-9 were brought out of lessons to engage in a taught Holy Communion, where Bishop Philip shared the meaning of each aspect of the Eucharist before Father Paul led the students in the liturgy and prayers.
When it came time to share the bread and the wine, all the students and staff had the opportunity to come to the front and choose one of three options.
Firstly, they could take the bread and drink a sip of wine, which symbolise Jesus’ body and blood, broken on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.
Secondly, they could cross their arms across their chests, indicating that they would like to receive a prayer or a blessing.
Or thirdly, they could nod their head in acknowledgement of the Bishop, and not partake in this aspect of the service.
Both students and staff found it a fascinating experience, and Balshaw’s was grateful to Bishop Philip and Father Paul for coming in and leading these Holy Communion Services.
Students have been giving personal feedback about their experiences and you can see a selection below:
I haven't ever experienced Eucharist before, since I don't go to Church
I learnt about how a priest dresses depending on the time of year and also all of the stages of the Eucharist
I felt closer to God and stopped thinking about other things in my day
I gained knowledge and God gained my trust
I think that it is a good idea for more Christian schools to do a Eucharist service at least once
